My idea:
In a world where humans and magical beings live alongside each other, a girl with both human and faerie blood starts experiencing hallucinations. She begins having social withdrawal in her adolescent years, and in adulthood she also starts experiencing hallucinations, and disorganised speech. She is told by an alternative practitioner that she can escape to the faerie world rather than live here in the human-dominated world, where her abilities are more likely to hamper her capability to live in a human-dominated society. She leaves her family and jumps at this.
In the faerie world, she starts attending a school where they teach students to organise and make use of their hallucinations. She is directed into a group of students who are told to figure out this puzzle of portal paintings that a certain duo of faerie artists created in the past.
When she is able to unlock the paintings, she and a group of friends dive into the paintings to delve further into the artists’ secrets.
Worldbuilding:
In faerie society, schools are like this:
- lvl 1: students practise acquiring visual hallucinations
- sometimes for oracles and seers
- sometimes for solutions to problems in society
- sometimes for artistic purposes
- lvl 2: students practise acquiring audio hallucinations
- lvl 3: students practise acquiring elemental powers / psychokinesis
- this art is kept to those who are initiated in and continue to live in the faerie world
